Protecting the incredible biodiversity of La Rinconada
On a small patch of land bordering the Rio Tacuarembo, UPM is working to protect a unique landscape and biodiversity hotspot, unlike any other in Uruguay.
Among UPM’s 22 conservation areas, perhaps none is as unique as La Rinconada. Situated just north of the river in a remote part of the province of Tacuarembó, La Rinconada is home to incredibly rare mobile dunes, which are only found in this part of Uruguay.
“These are fragile ecosystems, particularly the mobile dunes, and have very little territorial representation in the country,” says Ivan Grela, Environmental Affairs Coordinator at UPM Forestal Oriental.

Comienza Iberforesta en el recinto ferial de Plasencia
La IV Feria Forestal Ibérica (Iber-foresta) se celebra hoy y mañana en el recinto ferial del Berrocal. La Asociación extremeña de empresas de obra y servicios forestales y medioambientales (Extrefor) promueve este encuentro que reunirá a una treintena de expositores y que ha contado con la presencia del director general de Política Forestal de la Consejería de Agricultura, Desarrollo Rural, Población y Territorio, Pedro Muñoz, y la directora del Cicytex.

Stora Enso agrava la presión sobre Ence y sobre el conjunto del sector
El grupo papelero finlandés se desploma en Bolsa y arrastra al conjunto del sector europeo después de anunciar una caída del 35% en su beneficio y de rebajar sus previsiones para el cuarto trimestre por la debilidad de la demanda. Las presiones bajistas alcanzan a Ence justo antes de publicar, al cierre, sus resultados.
Los recelos de los inversores hacia el valor más castigado del Ibex en 2019 afloraron de nuevo durante la sesión de ayer. Ence registró la segunda mayor caída del índice selectivo, un 2,36%, y elevó al 33,5% las pérdidas acumuladas desde enero.

DS Smith joins FSC International

FSC is the world’s most trusted sustainable forest certification system. More than 200 million hectares of forest worldwide are FSC-certified, and DS Smith joins the certification system as part of its forestry stewardship policy and overarching sustainable approach to management.

Holmen introduces digital wood scanning
Holmen is now taking another step towards more resource-efficient and digital forestry. Through an advanced three-dimensional image analysis of the forest company’s wood deliveries, Holmen will be able to increase the efficiency of transport and boost the added value of the wood.
“This is a climate-smart solution that makes wood scanning more accurate and the whole process more efficient. Unmanned measurement terminals offer the possibility to be open around the clock, creating greater accessibility and fewer queues. In this way, we can make better use of transport resources, which is good for both the work environment and the climate,” says Andreas Rastbäck, Marketing Director at Holmen Skog.

UPM invests in Germany to reduce costs and emissions
UPM will strengthen its cost competitiveness and reduce its CO2 emissions by 5 % by investing in a Combined-Heat-Power (CHP) plant at its Nordland paper mill in Dörpen, Germany. The new facility supports the German energy transition “Energiewende” by contributing to the stability of the public power system.
The EUR 95 million investment to a new, highly efficient 80 MW gas fired power plant is financially attractive and further improves UPM’s environmental performance. The investment has a payback time of 3 years. The plant, planned to go on grid in Q3 2022, will cover the mill’s heat demand while enabling active participation in the increasingly volatile German electricity markets.

UPM supported bio-based and circular economy startups at Kasvu Open
Kasvu Open is the largest sparring program for startups in Finland, with 800 to 1,000 companies applying every year. UPM participated in the Bio and Circular Economy Growth Path in several roles: as partner, miller and member of jury.
The Growth Path of the Bio- and Circular Economy companies culminated in the Runway Day and semifinals in August in Äänekoski, Central Finland.
