UPM top management met with Uruguay’s President Dr. Tabaré Vázquez
(UPM, Montevideo, 8th February 2019 at 11:00 GMT-3:00) – UPM’s top management met with Uruguay’s President Dr. Tabaré Vázquez. During the visit, UPM´s President and CEO, Jussi Pesonen, and Petri Hakanen, Senior Vice President of UPM Uruguay Development Project, expressed their appreciation to Uruguay’s long-standing commitment in developing its forestry sector.
The discussions included a situation update on the implementation of the investment agreement signed between UPM and the Government of Uruguay in November 2017 and on the fundamental role of logistics infrastructure for the export sector to connect the inland by railway to Montevideo and a competitive deep-sea port. Moreover, views were exchanged on the stability and competitiveness of the operating environment in Uruguay.

Sin embargo, a pesar de su tamaño, los científicos han descubierto que el diminuto cerebro de este insecto es capaz de entender conceptos tan abstractos como el de cero u operaciones aritméticas básicas como la suma o la resta, cuestiones que nosotros tardamos en aprender años (o que incluso muchas culturas ni contemplaron). ¿Puede que en cuestión de cerebro no importe tanto el tamaño?

Wahlroos builds dividend machines
Summary:
Kauppalehti writes that until recently, UPM and Stora Enso shares behaved similarly on the Helsinki stock market. However, in 2016 the UPM share became 60% more profitable than Stora Enso and the difference has not disappeared, says Taaleri research director Mika Heikkilä. UPM's dividends have doubled in two years. During Björn Wahlroos's term as chairman, UPM has squeezed all possible profits out of the dying paper business. Stora Enso has now completed major investments and thanks to these it is in a better position in the packaging and cardboard market. Heikkilä does not say which strategy he considers superior. Taaleri's Arvon Markka fund has three times more Stora Enso than UPM. He believes that Stora Enso will be able to increase dividends more in the coming years.

Metsä Group beat UPM and Stora Enso
Summary:
Metsä Group was the most profitable out of the three big forest companies last year, Maaseudun Tulevaisuus writes. Metsä Group's profit margin was 14.9% while Stora Enso's was 12.6% and UPM's 14.2%. The profitability of pulp factories is at a historical high. However, the companies are aware of possible weakening of global trade. Stora Enso's CEO Karl-Henrik Sundström said the company prepares for this by starting a 120 million EUR cost-cutting program.

Para UPM un negocio, para el Banco Mundial, una partida de largo aliento
¿De dónde obtiene préstamos UPM para sus inversiones? ¿De dónde obtienen préstamos los gobiernos para pagar sus déficit? ¿Uruguay ya obtuvo un préstamo para realizar su “inversión” favorable a UPM?
UPM1 (ex BOTNIA) fue construida con un préstamo del Banco Mundial y antes de firmado el actual CONTRATO ROU UPM, Uruguay pidió y obtuvo un préstamo del Banco Mundial que, como dijo Telemundo en su momento, “está destinado a obras de mantenimiento vial, enmarcadas en el plan de infraestructura vial que el Gobierno diseñó para el periodo. Dicho plan también incluye obras requeridas en un eventual acuerdo con UPM”.

La eliminación de especies durante este período más reciente de la historia del planeta Tierra puede rivalizar con las grandes extinciones masivas registradas en el transcurso de otras eras geológicas. Para restaurar esa pérdida de biodiversidad y también el funcionamiento del ecosistema terrestre, habría que aplicar, y de manera urgente, el conocimiento ecológico existente en la actualidad.

Stora Enso to close PM6 at Imatra mills

Stora Enso is considering the closure of paper machine 6 at Imatra Mills in Finland, according to Nip Impressions. With annual production capacity of 90 000 tonnes, PM6 is a small machine that has reached its end-of-life. The planned closure would result in a reduction of maximum 80 employees.
According to Nip Impressions, the plan is to continue production until the maintenance break during third-quarter or until the end of 2019, with an ability to deliver the committed volumes.
The planned closure would cost approximately EUR 4 million related to asset write-off and costs of the co-determination process. The amount would be recorded as an item affecting comparability (IAC).
