PINOS TOCANTINS BRASILBrazilian green steel

Minas Gerais is the state that currently holds the largest area of ??planted forests in Brazil. This situation stems basically from the existence of a large metal-steel industry formed by the pig iron, steel and ferro-alloy industries and, more recently, by the pulp, wood fiber and pencil industries (AMS, 2011), which are of paramount importance for the development of the regional economy.

The State is privileged to possess a great mineral diversity and edaphoclimatic conditions that favor the development of forests of significant growth and production. This combination of favorable factors transforms the state into the world's most vigorous metallurgical-coal-mining park. In this context, the evolution of the charcoal market in Minas Gerais should be analyzed under the prism of a new business environment.

Despite the challenges that the economies of Brazil and other important countries in the world economic scenario have faced, efforts by the business sector and some positive reactions from sectors of the world economy have allowed the forestry sector to maintain a slightly positive performance and perspective along these ten years. Therefore, we have developed this article in order to emphasize the importance of coal to the Brazilian economy and the fundamental conditions for the consumption of forest raw material in the production of green steel, contributing to the establishment of a sustainable management for the sector.
